The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed a major breakthrough following the successful rescue of all passengers abducted during the recent Otukpo attack in Benue State.
The incident, which occurred on April 15, 2026, involved passengers travelling in a Benue Links bus along the Otukpo axis.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the police said the rescue operation was achieved through credible intelligence and coordinated clearance missions carried out by officers of the Benue State Police Command.
According to him, the operation focused on the Amla Forest axis and surrounding areas, leading to the safe rescue of the remaining 13 victims, including eight candidates who were en route to Otukpo to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
“In total, all 18 passengers have now been accounted for. Each rescued individual has undergone medical evaluation, is in stable condition, and will be reunited with their families after necessary debriefing,” he said.
The police spokesperson also confirmed the arrest of seven suspects during the operation, adding that three of them have already been identified as members of the kidnapping syndicate.
He noted that investigations are ongoing to track down other accomplices and dismantle the wider criminal network behind the attack.
“All suspects are in custody and are currently being interrogated in line with due legal procedures,” he added.
DCP Placid further disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun (as referenced in official command reports), commended the Benue State Police Command for their professionalism, bravery, and swift response.
He added that the IGP has ordered intensified clearance operations across Otukpo and neighbouring communities to further strengthen security and prevent a resurgence of criminal activity.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country, assuring Nigerians that efforts to rid communities of criminal elements would be sustained.
