Eight Feared Dead as Terrorists Bomb Bridge in Niger State

Eight people reportedly lost their lives on Monday after a vehicle they were traveling in hit an improvised explosive device (IED) in Niger State.

According to reports, terrorists had earlier planted a similar IED that destroyed a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu Local Government Area, connecting the Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities. The bridge is a vital route, particularly for traders and residents heading to the Babana major border market, which holds every Monday.

The incident occurred when a vehicle traveling between Nuku and Woro ran over the IED, killing the seven passengers and the driver instantly.

Spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the bombing and said clearance operations are ongoing.

He stated: “On 23rd March 2026 at about 6:30 a.m., a report was received that at about 2 a.m. the same day, suspected terrorists within the park forest used an explosive device to bomb a bridge located along Luma Road, Borgu LGA, connecting Luma-Babana-Agwara communities. The bridge was damaged during security operations in the area. Monitoring continues, and clearance operations have been intensified.”

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in the area.
