US Gas Prices Hit $4 Per Gallon, Highest Since 2022

The average price of gasoline in the United States has risen above $4 per gallon, marking its highest level in nearly four years, according to data released Tuesday by the American Automobile Association (AAA).

The surge, which represents a sharp increase from below $3 per gallon at the end of February, is largely attributed to rising global oil prices amid tensions linked to the ongoing Iran conflict.

AAA data shows that the national average stood at $4.018 per gallon as of Tuesday morning. The last time fuel prices exceeded the $4 mark was in August 2022, based on records from the US Energy Information Administration.

At the state level, California recorded the highest pump prices at $5.88 per gallon, followed by Hawaii at $5.45 and Washington at $5.34, underscoring regional disparities in fuel costs.

The rising prices present fresh economic and political challenges for President Donald Trump, particularly as the country approaches crucial midterm elections.

The increase in fuel costs is tied to disruptions in global oil supply, as Iran has reportedly restricted access to the Strait of Hormuz — a key shipping route responsible for transporting roughly 20 percent of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas.

Despite the tensions, Trump expressed optimism about a potential diplomatic resolution but warned of possible military escalation if the situation worsens.

Meanwhile, global oil markets showed slight relief on Tuesday, with major crude benchmarks dipping by nearly one percent, although prices remain above $100 per barrel.

Analysts note that while the United States primarily imports oil from Canada and Mexico, domestic fuel prices are still heavily influenced by global market trends.

With the summer travel season approaching, the spike in gasoline prices is expected to put additional financial pressure on American consumers, with projections suggesting further increases if geopolitical tensions persist.
