Suspected gunmen abduct nine worshippers from Catholic night vigil in Benue

Makurdi — The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of nine worshippers during a night vigil at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ojije community, Utonkon, Ado Local Government Area of the state.

The incident was disclosed on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Edet Udeme, during an interview with journalists. According to her, the victims were taking part in a night vigil when suspected armed gunmen stormed the church and forcefully whisked them away to an unknown destination.

DSP Udeme said the Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical and operational units to the affected community to intensify search-and-rescue operations aimed at securing the release of the abducted worshippers.

She assured residents of the area and the general public that the command remains fully committed to the protection of lives and property across Benue State.

The police spokesperson further disclosed that security has been reinforced in vulnerable locations within the state to prevent further attacks and reassure residents of their safety.

She added that efforts are ongoing to rescue the victims unharmed and apprehend those responsible for the attack, urging members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information.
