Protesters Storm National Assembly Over E-Transmission of Election Results

By Margaret Abah

Abuja — Nigerian youths on Thursday converged on the National Assembly Complex in Abuja in protest against the Senate’s rejection of electronic transmission of election results.

The demonstration, tagged “Occupy National Assembly,” is aimed at expressing public opposition to the Senate’s stance on e-transmission of election results in the ongoing electoral reform process.

According to reports, there was a heavy security presence at the scene, with operatives drawn from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps deployed to maintain law and order around the National Assembly complex.

The protest comes amid growing controversy over the Senate’s decision to reportedly reject a proposed amendment to Clause 60, sub-section 3 of the Electoral Amendment Bill. The rejected provision sought to make the electronic transmission of election results mandatory.

At the time of filing this report, protesters had begun marching from the Federal Secretariat towards the National Assembly gate, chanting slogans and carrying placards demanding transparent and credible elections.

The development reflects mounting public pressure on lawmakers to adopt reforms widely viewed as crucial to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
