The Nasarawa State Chairman of the Labour Party, Alexander Ombugu, has dismissed reports of his alleged suspension, insisting he remains the duly recognised leader of the party in the state.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lafia on Monday, Ombugu described the suspension claim as “a fiction of the imagination,” allegedly orchestrated by a faceless group posing as a caretaker committee.
He maintained that the group lacks legitimacy, noting that it is neither recognised by the party’s national leadership nor by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“I remain the only authentic chairman of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State as recognised by both the national leadership and INEC,” he stated.
Ombugu further alleged that the group is attempting to exploit unsuspecting political aspirants ahead of party primaries, warning that the spread of the suspension rumour is aimed at defrauding individuals seeking elective positions under the party’s platform.
He argued that the party’s constitution does not provide for the establishment of a caretaker committee, questioning the legality of the group’s emergence without due process.
The chairman also raised concerns over alleged moves by members of the group to invite duly elected ward and local government officials, as well as other stakeholders, to unauthorised meetings—actions he said are intended to create confusion within the party.
He cautioned party executives, members, and supporters across the 13 local government areas of the state against engaging with the unrecognised group.
Ombugu called on security agencies to investigate the activities of the purported committee to prevent party members and the public from being misled.
“We submitted the names of duly elected leaders from our congresses, and INEC acknowledged them accordingly,” he added.
He, however, urged party faithful to remain calm and not be provoked, assuring that the Labour Party remains united and focused ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Expressing optimism, Ombugu said the party would emerge stronger despite the current challenges and remain competitive both in Nasarawa State and nationwide.
He also listed members of the State Executive Committee elected during the party congress, naming himself as chairman, alongside Bulus Sakks as secretary, Esther Arishi as treasurer, Isiaka Okpu as financial secretary, Ablaku Anthony as public relations officer, Emmanuel Ayaka as auditor, and Hanatu Giwa as women leader, among others.
