Popular Nollywood actor, Wale Akorede, has stirred reactions on social media over the persistent rise in petrol prices and the country’s economic realities.
In a video shared on his Instagram page on Sunday, the veteran entertainer lamented the sudden increase in fuel prices, noting that the cost of petrol rose from ₦1,240 per litre on March 21 to ₦1,340 per litre the following day.
He questioned whether the government alone should be blamed for the hike, asking, “Is it the government that increased it or we, Nigerians?”
Okunnu also expressed concern over the high cost of fuel despite Nigeria being an oil-producing nation, describing the situation as troubling.
“We have our own crude oil, so why is fuel expensive? Other countries have fuel too, but theirs isn’t expensive. We are the ones responsible for this hardship,” he said.
The actor further highlighted the impact of rising fuel prices on ordinary Nigerians, particularly low-income earners such as commercial motorcyclists, who may struggle to cope with increasing living costs.
His comments have since generated widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians echoing concerns about the rising cost of living.
Reacting to the post, fellow actor Apakunfor expressed disappointment, while Biodun Thomas also lamented the country’s situation.
Some social media users called for stronger government regulations to curb arbitrary fuel pricing, stressing the need for enforcement mechanisms to stabilise the sector.
The development comes amid multiple price increases by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which has adjusted its gantry prices several times in March 2026, reflecting ongoing volatility in Nigeria’s deregulated downstream petroleum sector.
