The Delta State Police Command has taken disciplinary action against one of its officers following the death of a 28-year-old suspect during an operation in Effurun.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, and was confirmed in an official statement released on April 29 via the Delta State Government communication channels.
According to the police, operatives acted on intelligence that the suspect, identified as Mene Ogidi, was attempting to transport a parcel believed to contain a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
A police team was immediately deployed to arrest him, but the operation reportedly turned fatal when the officer in charge, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm contrary to operational guidelines, resulting in the suspect’s death.
The Command described the action as a breach of standard procedure, stressing that it maintains zero tolerance for extra-judicial conduct.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered the immediate arrest of the officer. He was first taken to the State Headquarters in Asaba before being transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for further disciplinary and possible prosecutorial action.
“The Command maintains zero tolerance for unprofessional conduct and will ensure that justice is served,” the statement said.
The police also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that a full investigation is underway.
Residents have been urged to remain calm as authorities continue with the probe into the incident.
