Mother, Son Cheat Death as SUV Somersaults Along NYSC Camp, LASU–Isheri Expressway

A mother and her teenage son narrowly escaped death on Wednesday morning after a Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) somersaulted repeatedly along the NYSC Bus Stop corridor of the LASU–Isheri Expressway in Lagos.

Eyewitnesses said the lone accident occurred at about 7:00 a.m., during peak traffic hours, sending panic through commuters and motorists plying the busy Lagos State University axis.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed that no life was lost in the crash.

According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that the Lexus Jeep, bearing registration number KJA 39 JT, was travelling from Isheri towards Igando at high speed when it suddenly lost stability. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted three times before coming to a halt amid heavy traffic.

LASTMA operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene and executed a coordinated rescue operation. The victims were extricated from the badly damaged vehicle with bruises and visible trauma, narrowly avoiding what could have resulted in a fatality.

Security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Igando Division, provided reinforcement at the scene, ensuring crowd control and maintaining order throughout the rescue and evacuation process.

Family members of the victims were promptly notified and later arrived to transport them for further medical evaluation and treatment.

To forestall secondary accidents and ease congestion along the ever-busy corridor, officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) collaborated with LASTMA to remove the wreckage. The damaged vehicle was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation and necessary administrative procedures.

Bakare-Oki reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to rapid emergency response, proactive traffic management, and sustained enforcement of road safety regulations across the state. He urged motorists to strictly observe speed limits and conduct routine mechanical checks — particularly on critical components such as braking systems — before embarking on journeys.

He further warned that excessive speeding, especially when combined with mechanical faults, remains a leading cause of severe road crashes on major expressways.
