Maiduguri Explosions: ADC Urges Tinubu to Return, Tackle Insecurity

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the deadly bomb explosions that rocked Maiduguri on Monday night, leaving at least 23 people dead and several others injured.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party expressed deep sympathy to the victims, their families, and residents of the affected communities, describing the incident as a national tragedy.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the people of Maiduguri,” the party stated, while also commending the efforts of emergency responders and security personnel for their swift intervention in assisting the injured and restoring calm.

Despite the response, the ADC raised serious concerns about Nigeria’s security situation, warning against a return to the era of persistent attacks in the North-East, particularly after recent gains in stabilising the region.

The party criticised the Federal Government’s handling of the situation, arguing that the country’s leadership appears distracted at a critical moment. It expressed concern that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently outside the country amid the crisis.

“Moments like this demand the full and undivided attention of the nation’s leadership,” the statement read.

The opposition party further accused top government officials of prioritising politics over national security, describing the situation as a “dangerous distraction” that is costing lives.

Highlighting the human toll of insecurity, the ADC stressed that victims of such attacks should not be reduced to mere statistics.

“Those being killed by terrorists are not just numbers. They are people’s children, husbands, fathers and families,” the statement added.

The party called on the president to return immediately and take decisive action to address the worsening security challenges, emphasising that the protection of lives and property must remain the government’s top priority.

In addition, the ADC urged the Federal Government to provide compensation to families of victims, including both civilians and military personnel, as part of efforts to demonstrate accountability and support for those affected.

The party concluded by warning that the rising wave of insecurity across the country is unacceptable and must be urgently addressed.
