Lagos Announces Partial Closure of Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway for Rehabilitation

The Lagos State Government has announced a partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway to allow the Federal Ministry of Works carry out critical rehabilitation on failed sections of the road.

The State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, explaining that the rehabilitation would cover the stretch between U-Turn Bus Stop and Sango Tollgate, affecting both inbound and outbound lanes.

According to Osiyemi, the rehabilitation exercise is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, February 11, and end on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, spanning a four-week period. He said the project would be executed in two phases to minimise traffic disruption.

He explained that Phase One, which will focus on Abeokuta-bound traffic, will run from Wednesday, February 11, to Wednesday, March 4. During this period, rehabilitation work will be carried out from U-Turn Bus Stop inward Sango Tollgate.

Osiyemi said traffic from Lagos/Abule-Egba toward Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate would be diverted to one half of the carriageway, approximately 20 metres away from the active work zone, before being restored to full access after the construction area. Rehabilitation, he noted, would be done one lane at a time, with traffic diverted to completed sections as work progresses. Lagos-bound motorists, he added, would continue to enjoy free flow of traffic during this phase.

For Phase Two, which will focus on Lagos-bound traffic, Osiyemi said work would cover the stretch from Obadeyi Bus Stop to Ekoro Junction, lasting from Wednesday, March 4, to Wednesday, March 11.

During this phase, traffic from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate inward Lagos/Abule-Egba will be diverted through one half of the carriageway, about 20 metres from the work zone, with normal flow restored after the construction area. He added that, similar to Phase One, work would be executed in halves, while motorists heading toward Abeokuta would experience uninterrupted movement.

The commissioner assured road users that adequate traffic management measures would be put in place throughout the duration of the project. He urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead, obey traffic signs, and cooperate with traffic officials on duty.

Osiyemi appealed for the patience and understanding of the motoring public, stressing that the rehabilitation works are being undertaken in the interest of safety and improved road conditions for all users.
