Four Killed in Ogun Night Road Crash

Four persons have lost their lives in a fatal road accident that occurred late Monday night along the Ijebu-Imushin axis of the Ijebu Ode–Ore Expressway in Ogun State.

The crash, which happened around 11:16 p.m., involved a white Toyota Hiace bus (BDJ 482 XC) and a blue MAN Diesel truck belonging to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

The Ogun State spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to her, the bus collided with the truck, resulting in the instant death of all four occupants of the bus—two male adults and two female adults.

“Regrettably, all four occupants sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead at the scene. No other casualties were recorded,” she said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was caused by excessive speeding. The truck had reportedly broken down while being towed after the towing chain snapped, leaving it stationary on the highway.

The speeding bus subsequently rammed into the immobile truck. Following the incident, the driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene, abandoning the truck.

FRSC rescue operatives were said to have arrived within eight minutes of receiving the distress call. The victims’ remains have been evacuated to the State Hospital mortuary in Ijebu Ode.

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Imushin Division have taken custody of the vehicles involved and commenced further investigations.

Reacting to the incident, Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, urged motorists to obey speed limits, especially at night, and ensure that towing equipment is in good condition to prevent avoidable accidents.

The accident involved a truck loaded with yams and a commercial tricycle. Reports indicate that the truck lost control while attempting a U-turn, leading to the collision.
