Ex-AGF Nwabuoku Sentenced to 72 Years for N868 Million Fraud

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to 72 years in prison for defrauding the government of N868.46 million.

Nwabuoku was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges of money laundering and diversion of public funds.

In a statement on its official X handle on Monday, the EFCC hailed the conviction as a major milestone in promoting accountability and deterring financial crimes in the public sector.

“The former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, prosecuted by the EFCC at the Federal High Court, Abuja, for money laundering involving N868.46 million, has been convicted and sentenced to 72 years in jail,” the agency stated.

The court found Nwabuoku guilty after examining evidence presented by the EFCC, which detailed how the funds were allegedly laundered through multiple transactions. The 72-year sentence represents the cumulative penalties for all the counts on which he was convicted.

Nwabuoku briefly served as Acting Accountant-General before his removal from office amid corruption allegations.
