Defence Minister Charges Newly Promoted Army Generals to Heighten Operational Standards
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), has called on newly promoted senior officers of the Nigerian Army to demonstrate higher levels of dedication, loyalty and professionalism as they assume greater responsibilities in safeguarding the nation.
The charge came on Tuesday during a decoration ceremony held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1, Asokoro, Abuja, where 28 Brigadier Generals were elevated to the rank of Major General. The batch included one posthumous promotion.
Addressing the officers, General Musa—who served as the Special Guest of Honour—commended their courage, discipline and years of committed service. He noted that their elevation reflects their unwavering contribution to national security and places them at the forefront of shaping the strategic direction of the Nigerian Army.
“These officers are among the finest leaders in our Armed Forces,” he said. “Their new ranks come with immense responsibility, and I urge them to confront emerging security challenges with renewed resolve.”
The Defence Minister also underscored the importance of inter-service collaboration, enhanced intelligence sharing and synergy across security agencies. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving personnel welfare and providing the Armed Forces with the resources required to execute their duties effectively. He further conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s congratulations to the promoted officers.
In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, described the ceremony as a major milestone that honours officers who have consistently exhibited integrity, competence and loyalty. He reiterated that the Army’s promotion system remains merit-based, transparent and fair.
General Shaibu highlighted ongoing efforts to boost morale within the military through better healthcare, upgraded infrastructure and improved working conditions, noting that the promotions reflect trust in the officers’ ability to deliver on higher responsibilities both locally and internationally.
Speaking on behalf of the newly promoted generals, Major General Francis Omata expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for approving their elevation. He pledged unwavering loyalty to the nation and applauded the Minister of Defence and the COAS for their exemplary leadership and guidance.
The event attracted prominent dignitaries, including former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the Minister of State for Finance, members of the National Assembly, Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, former Service Chiefs, senior military officers and the President of the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association.
