Christmas Meal Turns Violent: 18-Year-Old Hospitalises Brother in Ibadan Food Dispute
A Christmas Day celebration ended in tragedy in Ibadan, Oyo State, after an 18-year-old boy allegedly headbutted his younger brother during a dispute over food, leaving the victim hospitalised.
The incident occurred at Alafaara, Ayedade, Elenushoso area of Ibadan, when a neighbour presented the family of seven with five plates of rice as part of the yuletide celebrations. What was intended as a gesture of goodwill reportedly degenerated into violence during an argument over how the food should be shared among family members.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the elder sibling, identified as Akeem Lukman, became embroiled in a heated exchange with his younger brother, Kareem, while the food was being shared. In the course of the disagreement, Akeem allegedly headbutted Kareem, causing him to slump and lose consciousness.
Kareem was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility, where he later regained consciousness. Medical sources confirmed that he is currently receiving treatment for swelling on his forehead and remains under observation.
The incident left the parents of the boys visibly traumatised, describing the development as shocking and completely unexpected. Their father, Raji, speaking in disbelief, said the family was still struggling to understand how a moment meant for celebration spiralled into violence.
“The children were extremely hungry before the food arrived, but we never imagined it would lead to something like this,” he said.
Their mother, Modinat, also expressed sorrow, describing the incident as heartbreaking. “It was supposed to be a joyful Christmas moment for the family. Instead, it turned into a nightmare,” she lamented.
Akeem, who was reportedly shaken after the incident, expressed remorse but struggled to justify his actions. “Hunger pushed me. I didn’t know what came over me,” he said briefly.
The incident has since generated concern among residents in the area, with calls for improved family conflict resolution and emotional management, particularly amid prevailing economic hardships.
Kareem’s condition is reported to be stable as he continues to receive medical care, while the family has appealed for calm and prayers as they recover from the distressing experience.
