A tragic incident in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, occurred when a policeman’s accidental discharge fatally shot a nursing mother, Ifeoluwa Adekolu.
Reports indicate that the incident took place at the Oke-Ila Police Station. An eyewitness stated that the woman was standing across the road from the police station when an officer, visiting from another division, fired his weapon in celebration of a colleague’s promotion. Unfortunately, a stray bullet struck her.
Despite being rushed to a hospital, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The state Commissioner of Police, recently promoted to Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the incident. He mentioned that the involved officer has been disarmed and detained by the police command. AIG Adeniran stated that the officer will undergo interrogations in accordance with the Nigeria Police Act.
