Police Clarify Vincent Makinde’s Status Amid Femi Falana’s Appeal

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a statement clarifying the status of Vincent Makinde, a dismissed officer recently captured in a viral video while allegedly being detained without cause. The video, which depicts Makinde in leg restraints and making claims of unlawful detention, drew attention from human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, who demanded his release.

The Spatula gathered that in their response, police officials confirmed that Makinde is not a current officer but rather a dismissed Inspector, expelled from the force in 2022 after a comprehensive investigation and orderly room trial. He was found guilty of numerous serious offenses, including abuse of office, extortion, gross misconduct, dereliction of duty, and insubordination.

The controversy surrounding Makinde’s detention deepened when police revealed that he had escaped lawful custody while on remand, only to re-emerge in mid-2024, falsely representing himself as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. Authorities stated that he was apprehended while claiming to be an active member of the police force, armed with a rifle.

A statement by the police Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi reveals that upon his capture, Makinde reportedly displayed violent and aggressive behavior, resisting arrest. Due to his combative nature and prior escape from custody, police used leg restraints to ensure the safety of both officers involved and the public. The use of such restraints, the force emphasized, is a standard procedure when dealing with individuals exhibiting aggressive behavior.

“The restraint was employed as a precautionary measure to ensure everyone’s safety and to prevent another escape,” the police clarified in their statement. “This practice is consistent with global standards for detaining individuals who actively resist lawful custody.”

The Spatula gathered that currently, Vincent Makinde remains in police custody, awaiting further investigations related to his impersonation of a police officer and other alleged criminal activities connected to his previous offenses. Investigators confirmed that additional inquiries into his ongoing criminal conduct are underway.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability. It emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust, assuring citizens that personnel found violating the law will be held accountable for their actions. The force affirmed its dedication to upholding the rule of law and maintaining the integrity of policing in the country.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the management of former police officers and the issue of impersonation within law enforcement. The police force’s proactive approach in addressing these allegations aims to reassure the public amid growing scrutiny.

As the investigation continues, the Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its mission to ensure justice while upholding the highest standards of conduct among its members.
