The video, which depicts Makinde in leg restraints and making claims of unlawful detention, drew attention from human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, who demanded his release.

He was found guilty of numerous serious offenses, including abuse of office, extortion, gross misconduct, dereliction of duty, and insubordination.
The controversy surrounding Makinde’s detention deepened when police revealed that he had escaped lawful custody while on remand, only to re-emerge in mid-2024, falsely representing himself as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. Authorities stated that he was apprehended while claiming to be an active member of the police force, armed with a rifle.
A statement by the police Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi reveals that upon his capture, Makinde reportedly displayed violent and aggressive behavior, resisting arrest. Due to his combative nature and prior escape from custody, police used leg restraints to ensure the safety of both officers involved and the public. The use of such restraints, the force emphasized, is a standard procedure when dealing with individuals exhibiting aggressive behavior.
“The restraint was employed as a precautionary measure to ensure everyone’s safety and to prevent another escape,” the police clarified in their statement. “This practice is consistent with global standards for detaining individuals who actively resist lawful custody.”
