In a significant move aimed at fostering Islamic advisory support, Niger State Governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, officially inaugurated a 16-member State Standing Committee for Shura at the Government House in Minna this morning.
During the ceremony, Governor Bago emphasized that the committee members were chosen based on their exemplary track records and contributions to society, particularly in relation to Islamic matters. He urged them to live up to the trust placed in them by diligently working to fulfill the committee’s objectives.
The Shura Committee’s primary role will be to serve as a trusted Islamic advisory body for the Governor and the Niger State Government, providing insights on purely Islamic issues. It is also tasked with promoting compassion and good governance through mutual consultations, ensuring justice, equality, and dignity for all Nigerlites.
Additionally, the committee will analyze and advise on intra and interreligious conflicts, offering sound solutions for enduring peace in the state. Members are expected to execute directives from the Governor and the Bureau for Religious Affairs, while upholding the personal image of themselves, the Governor, and the state.
Heading the committee is Sheikh Alh. Adamu Yakatun, Chief Imam of Bida and Chairman of the Niger State Imams Forum, with Dr. Umar Farooq Abdullahi serving as Secretary. The diverse group includes prominent Imams from various regions, representatives from organizations like CMS and JIBWIS, and notable figures from Islamic women’s organizations, ensuring a broad representation of Niger State’s Islamic community.
Governor Bago concluded by encouraging committee members to carry out their duties with a sense of accountability and prayerful devotion.
