Gov. Alia Unveils Benue Lager Beer, Describes It as an Economic Strategy

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, announced that the launch of the state’s Premium Lager Beer, “Zeva,” is part of an economic strategy aimed at enhancing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and reducing reliance on federal allocations. This initiative seeks to create jobs, address unemployment, and foster economic stability while empowering local farmers by guaranteeing a market for their products.

During the official unveiling at IBB Square in Makurdi, the state capital, Governor Alia emphasized that the brewery will serve as a model for innovation and industrial excellence, positioning Benue as an attractive destination for both local and international investors.

Alia described the event as a significant step toward transforming the state’s economic landscape, industrialization, and sustainable development. He stated, “The production of Zeva Premium Lager Beer by BIPC is a major milestone for us as a state. It reflects our commitment to harness our resources, revive dormant industries, and foster local economic growth.”

He urged the people of Benue to take pride in the Benue Lager Beer, encouraging them to “like” other brands but to “love” their own. The Governor commended the innovative leadership of Dr. Raymond Asemaka, MD/CEO of BIPC, and his team for their exceptional work.

Also present, the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh, represented by Minority Leader Hon. Michael Audu, praised the initiative and assured that the legislature would support BIPC with favorable legislation for the overall benefit of the state.

In his goodwill message, Prof. Barnabas Achakpa-Ikyo, Centre Leader of the Center for Food Technology and Research at Benue State University, expressed gratitude to the state government for recognizing the center’s contributions to the beer’s production. He assured citizens of the center’s ongoing support to optimize local resources in boosting the state’s IGR.

Dr. Raymond Asemakaha further explained the rationale behind reestablishing Benue Lager Beer, highlighting goals such as improving GDP, generating employment, supporting local farmers through backward integration, and increasing government revenue. The beer is available in cans and bottles, alongside the launch of “Oyi Bitters.”
