In an inspiring gathering at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House in Makurdi, the state government on Friday celebrated the achievements of students from two secondary schools who were recognised for their outstanding performance in the recent concluded 64th Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) Competition held in Abuja.

The Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, praised the dedication and intellect of the young scholars, affirming the crucial role of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in shaping the future of the state.

Represented by his deputy, Barr. Dr. Sam Ode, mni, Governor Alia stated, “As a state, we have made it our duty to focus on science, technology, and innovation. It is our conviction that education is the cornerstone of our children’s future and, indeed, our state’s progress”.

He emphasised the importance of aligning with global trends and embracing STI.

The event celebrated the victory recorded by students from two key institutions that fostered an environment conducive to academic excellence.

The Governor acknowledged the contributions of the “proprietors, staff, and students of SORA Heights, Gboko, and Kusaki College, Gboko, for providing the foundation for these young talents to excel”.

Highlights of the ceremony was the presentation of trophies and winners to the Executive Governor by the Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Dr. Frederick Ikyaan, assisted by Rt. Hon. Nick Eworo, Commissioner for Science and Technology. They included Miss Doose Joy Naswem from SORA Heights, who secured first place in the senior secondary category science quiz, and Master Lumtor Ndiir along with Miss Rita Tertsea from Kusaki College, who jointly achieved second place in the Free Choice Project Exhibition for their innovative solar-powered motorbike.

Earlier in the event, Dr. Timothy Akpoghol, chairman of the STAN Benue State chapter, acknowledged the critical support of the state government in empowering students to excel. He stated, “This remarkable achievement represents the resilience, hard work, and intellectual capacity of our students and teachers, along with the unwavering support from the government and stakeholders”.

Dr. Akpoghol also stressed the need for increased investment in modern infrastructure and training in science education by the state government.

Prof. Nicolas Ada, STAN Coordinator for National Curricula Development, underscored the necessity of prioritising science education, warning that “Any country or state that neglects science education and ICT does so at its peril”.

He expressed delight that Benue State is at the forefront of digital education and assured the state government of STAN’s commitment to promoting science education.
