In a hopeful New Year address, Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia assured residents of Benue State that his administration is committed to further development and improvement of living standards in the state. Speaking on January 1, he emphasized that Benue has not yet seen the full potential of his leadership, promising greater achievements ahead.
Alia highlighted several accomplishments from the previous year, including the establishment of the Benue Multi-purpose ICT and Fashion Hub, revitalization of the Benue Printing and Publishing Corporation, and ongoing construction of a Cancer Treatment Centre at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi. He stated that 2025 will serve as a year of consolidation, focused on “RENEWED HOPE” and expanding new opportunities for both agriculture and economic development.
“Last year, we all saw and felt indicators of a new Benue which you and I are building,” the Governor stated. “We are not only working towards making our state a hub of industrial and economic activities, but we are also determined to realize a Benue that sustainably breathes the air of premium quality healthcare services.”
Addressing critical issues affecting development, Alia emphasized the importance of security in advancing state projects. He introduced the Benue Civil Protection Guard, dubbed “Anyam Nyor,” and announced support measures including the donation of vehicles and equipment to enhance local security efforts.
Looking ahead, the Governor set forth plans to implement a minimum wage of 75,000 Naira aimed at improving worker welfare and productivity. He also announced a provision of 33 tractors and financial support to community groups for climate-smart agricultural initiatives under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) scheme. Furthermore, he committed to supplying farmers with essential agricultural inputs at subsidized rates to boost food production.
Despite facing skepticism regarding his leadership style, Governor Alia reaffirmed his focus on long-term infrastructure and institutional development rather than short-term financial handouts. “I am more concerned with creating a system that benefits every individual and group in Benue,” he stressed, urging residents to take a stance on the most effective path to a better future for the state.
The Governor concluded by thanking the citizens for their continued support and faith in his administration despite various challenges, emphasizing that the 2025 budget and the recent launch of the “Benue State 10-year Development Plan” signal a promising future for all Benue citizens.
