Governor Otti Demonstrates the Spirit of One Nigeria

“As long as you live, work, and pay your tax in Abia, you are from Abia. Where you were born is an accident of history.” — Gov. Alex Otti, OFR

The recent appointment of Mr. Benson Ojeikere from Edo State as the Head of Service in Abia State highlights a significant shift towards national unity and meritocracy. It echoes the sentiments of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who envisioned a world where individuals are judged by their character rather than their origins.

In Nigeria, regional affiliations often influence opportunities, yet Ojeikere’s journey is a testament to merit over ethnicity. Having served in Abia during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), he rose through the ranks due to his dedication and competence, ultimately becoming the number one civil servant in the state.

Otti’s administration exemplifies how merit-based promotion can foster talent, regardless of tribal background. Ojeikere’s swift progression from Director to Head of Service in just 18 months reflects this commitment.

This appointment is historically significant, as it marks one of the first instances where a state governor appointed a non-indigene from another geopolitical zone to such a key position. Otti has effectively challenged the notion that state of origin should limit access to leadership roles, reinforcing the idea that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity.

Governor Otti’s decision sends a powerful message to those clinging to ethnic biases. It showcases that effective governance requires surrounding oneself with capable individuals, irrespective of their ethnic or geographical backgrounds. By prioritizing merit, leaders can ensure progress and unity.

As King noted, success in a multicultural society relies on collaboration. Nigerians must be assured that their origins won’t hinder their success in any field. This new approach in Abia under Otti demonstrates that merit and contributions are the true benchmarks for advancement and recognition.

In this NEW ABIA, the focus is on ability and commitment, proving that in Nigeria, everyone can thrive irrespective of their background. Governor Otti is pioneering a path towards a genuinely united Nigeria, where merit is the key to opportunities.
