An atmosphere of dreaded terror enveloped the residents of Yaav and Mbakyol council wards in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State on Christmas Day, as armed bandits, believed to be herdsmen, stormed the communities. The assault resulted in the deaths of over 12 people and the abduction of seven children.
Lawrence Akerigba, a resident now seeking refuge in Jato-Aka, recounted that the attackers took seven children, the eldest being six and the youngest just two years old.
He reported that the attack occurred around 4 PM, a time when families were gathered at home enjoying the festive atmosphere. In addition to the fatalities, several individuals were injured and others remain unaccounted for.
Later that evening, eight young boys, sent to gather crops for Boxing Day festivities, encountered the assailants. One boy was killed, while the remaining seven sustained gunshot wounds and are currently being treated in an undisclosed hospital.
Akerigba revealed that the community has faced ongoing violence from bandits, particularly following the burial of Wantaregh Paul Unongo. He noted that out of five council wards in Turan community, four have been abandoned for over a decade due to relentless attacks by the suspected herdsmen.
“Originally from Mbadura Council ward in Turan Community, we have all fled our homes and are now in Jato-Aka, living in fear,” he said. “It feels as though the government has forgotten us; there is no assistance, no relief in sight. While others celebrated, we faced a sudden and traumatic assault on our already vulnerable community.”
