Federal Inaugurates Construction of Flyover in Makurdi

On Saturday, September 13, 2025, the federal government officially launched the construction of a flyover at Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi, an essential part of the second phase of the Makurdi–9th Mile dualization project. Representative of the president and minister of works referred to the project as a significant gift to the people of Benue State and its neighboring areas.

During the event, the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, expressed appreciation to the people of Benue State for their cooperation, which allowed the project to commence seamlessly. “We appreciate your commitment to improving federal roads. The federal government cannot handle all road constructions alone, so when state governors step in, it reflects their dedication to their communities,” Umahi stated.

He noted that the project spans approximately 260 kilometers (520 kilometers when dualized) and represents one of the largest legacy initiatives of the current administration at an estimated cost of $950 million, financed by China Exim Bank. Umahi highlighted that the flyover was not part of the original budget but was given as a gift from President Tinubu to Governor Hyacinth Alia. He emphasized its potential to drive economic growth throughout Benue and Enugu states.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, dubbed the flyover and dualization a “game changer” for transportation, agriculture, and trade within the region. “Having grown up in Makurdi, I understand the importance of this road in linking the Northeast to the South-South and Southeast. It will enable farmers to transport their produce, such as fresh vegetables, to Abuja and beyond without significant post-harvest losses,” he remarked.

Alia expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for this initiative, noting it as “one of many gifts” to Benue State in the past two years. He added that his administration has been working alongside federal efforts by rehabilitating sections of the Gboko–Makurdi road using state resources.

Engr. Adam Onundi, Managing Director of Yolas Consultants Ltd, presented the technical details, stating that the Makurdi–9th Mile dualization project is divided into five sections covering 250.6 kilometers, along with a 15.8-kilometer Lafia Bypass. The flyover at Wurukum marks the start of the first section, designed with durable features.

Mr. Wang, Project Manager of China Harbour Construction Company, assured timely and high-quality completion of the project, highlighting their intention to work on all sections simultaneously for greater efficiency. “We promise to complete the major works before the next election and adhere to the highest quality standards,” he stated.

The Wurukum Flyover is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion in Makurdi. In addition, the broader Makurdi–9th Mile dualization project is anticipated to enhance regional connectivity, stimulate commerce, and unlock agricultural potential in one of Nigeria’s key food-production areas.

Following the launch, Governor Alia and Minister Umahi inspected ongoing construction projects in the capital, including the renovation of the Makurdi-Gboko road and the Highlevel underpass, where the minister expressed satisfaction with the quality and speed of the work being done.
